Intro: Hello, today I’m doing my first official food and brief small business review. What I’m reviewing are the following:
Business: Ruby’s Plates
Reviewed Dish: Custom Made Chocolate Chip Cookie Cake
(Links and other information will be below)
Review: So I met up personally with Ruby, who is a long time trusted friend of mine. I sat down with her and made her an offer.. I know she is very serious about her buisness and I wanted to help her grow, but in the right way. So I offered to collab with her and sincerely and honestly review a single home made product of hers as well as the process of getting it, in great detail. I wanted to take both our ventures to the next level. She wholeheartedly and excitedly agreed! With that we began to plan the beginning of our new partnership.
Ruby told me to think about what dish of hers I wanted to try and review, and I came to the decision of a custom chocolate chip cookie cake, which usually cost about $25. I asked her if she would not mind writing on top of it customized wording(see pictures), as she usually does for other similar orders.. Such as “Happy Birthday” or “Congratulations” and other options. She agreed and said she did not mind doing that at all. Ruby has always been reliable, but the one thing to keep in mind is that Ruby is an extremely busy person, juggling a career, family, and buisness all at the same time. So its best to let her know early on what you definitely want and agree to a schedule for it, as she usually has dozens of other orders to do and sometimes a friendly reminder is all she needs at most. So after sometime, we agree to a schedule and pick up.. FYI she lives in SoCal/Compton 90220 and while sometimes she does drop off’s if she has time and your close by, she usually has pick ups where you will have to come to her, which for most is really not a problem. It all depends on the situation. Anyways, I go drive and pick up the cookie cake from her and take it home.. I begin to take my review notes.
First off, The packaging is a big solid brown square box, with a visible opening at the top to look into it at the cookie cake.. Simple, yet effective and sturdy. She did not cheap out on the packaging and it definitely holds solid and I had much more peace of mind carrying it around, unlike the flimsy cardboard box’s you get at most stores. As for the cookie cake, right off the bat I was impressed at the size of the cookie cake, they are definitely bigger then what the pictures depict.. And we all know more is better! I took it out of the box’s multiple times to do a photo shoot for this review, I was worried that it would crumble up or the frosting would smear.. None of those things happened, it held solid the entire time. The frosting was an assortment of colors that I requested, black and yellow as well as sprinkles. She even got my blog URL right on there in the middle, with the only exception being the “The” in the URL had to be excluded so it would fit perfectly. This was an alternation we agreed on and was a conscious decision, I said it was not a big deal. I think everyone knows my full blog URL by now haha. Just be sure whatever you want custom written on there is not too long. Anyways, now it was time for the taste test!
As I put the knife against the cookie cake, I figured I would have to cut hard. To my surprise, it cut relatively easily through, though not too easy. I decided to cut them triangle shaped, just like a slice of pie. It put them on my plate and take my first bite with a fork. I first notice how moist and soft it is.. Firm and chewy, but not too much, but just right. The taste is incredible, its a rich and prominent flavor. It tastes of the most freshest chocolate chip cookie I might have ever tasted! The frosting was a surprise, it tasted so sweet and melted in my mouth. The frosting complimented the cookie taste nicely, they definitely work great together. The chocolate chips mixed so effectively in the dough, it was almost one with it, you didn’t have to chew and break them up. This cookie cake was simply amazing! What was probably my favorite part is the soft yet firm moistness, not crunchy yet not too doughy.. There was a near perfect balance and I was thoroughly impressed. For extra moist goodness, have it with a glass of milk! Its very filling and rich, and that extra hydrating kick of milk makes it that much more heavenly! Needless to say, I was very pleased and considered it a work of ART. But there was one more test to conduct, that most people would not consider..
I had to give it the “See how well it ages” test. The biggest blight in my opinion of normal store bought pastries, is that they age TERRIBLY. I like to save and eat some of my foods through out the week, yes I know most people don’t recommend that, but its just in my nature to do that. And cookies/cake related foods notoriously age horribly.. They get very dry, stale, hard, and almost taste sand like. As I said, it’s probably my biggest criticism of store bought pastries and other foods honestly. So I took Ruby’s cookie cake and deliberately slowly ate it through out the week(she doesn’t recommend doing that either but its my personal test haha). To my delightful surprise, the cookie cake stayed relatively moist and edible through out the week! It honestly stayed almost entirely the same, which I don’t think I have ever experienced food that stayed that fresh for that long. Maybe it was the high quality ingredients or how she cooked it, but I’m proud to say that it held up very nicely and I eagerly ate it without any problems! I must say, she has got this dish down pat and I sincerely recommend this dish to you all!
In conclusion, so far Ruby and her business ‘Ruby’s Plates’ have proven to me that they are reliable, unique, delicious, and relatively easy to obtain. I have given my fair and honest review of an order of her home made food. She has made hundreds of orders and made countless loyal customers, which I can say I’m proudly one of. I cannot wait until I can review the next plate! She has so many more options available to choose from, why don’t you give them a try? Her links are below, check out the menu and send her a message! Tell her Jacob said hi! :)
