52. Review: Ruby’s Plates Revisited

Intro: Hello, today I’m doing my second official food and brief small business review. What I’m reviewing are the following..

Business: Ruby’s Plates (for the second time).

Reviewed Dish: One dozen home made half and half, Chocolate Chip Cookies and Cookies and cream cookies(which are Oreo cookie chunks spread on top of a regular cookie).

(Links and other information will be at the bottom of this review)

Full Review: After having such a successful review the first time, when I reviewed Ruby’s custom made cookie pie(check it out).. I just had to review another one of her incredible dishes! After some talking, we decided to review probably her most famous dish of all.. Her homemade cookies. But I wanted to have them mixed between two flavors, so as to have a variety and try multiple kinds of cookies. I was eager to try them out, so once again here is my honest genuine review of her dish and the experience as a whole.

In terms of ordering and receiving the dishes. The cost of these dozen cookies is normally: $22. Ruby has always made the process as easy and straightforward as possible. She is very professional and is a no nonsense type of person. That being said, even she admits to this.. She is a busy mother to three kids, while having a full time job, and running this food business.. So there may be those rare time where she has to reschedule the pick up, or change the pick up time, or even have to take a break from orders due to other obligations. It is understandable, she is human and has a full family life to deal with.. though those interruptions are rare, It happens. That is why it is generally for the best to order ahead just stick to the pick up time and date gives. It makes the process easier and faster for you and her. So we agreed on a time and date, and I went to pick up at her business location in Long Beach, California.

I made it home and first inspected the packaging, I have this personal philosophy.. The packaging and how you package your product is almost as important as the product itself. Much like with the previous cookie pie, she packages her pastries with this thick sturdy foldable cardboard box that opened up pizza box style and has a see through window like film, so you can see the product inside when its closed. I always found her packaging very satisfactory, as they are not flimsy, grease stained, paper thin, bottom about to break open, cheap box’s that you will find at most stores. The packaging also works pretty well while driving, the contents don’t move too much and she tapes the sides to reinforce the lid to keep it shut. Its a solid, reliable, nice looking box.

Now it was time to try out the cookies! I opened the box.. The aroma was incredible, even before I opened the box I could smell it.. But the full on aroma I smelled once I open it, was intoxicating. So like I said six of the cookies were her original chocolate chip cookies and the second half was ‘Cookies and cream’ style cookies. I put them both on my plate and take my first bite of the chocolate chip cookie.. It was absolutely delicious, soft, moist, sorta chewy, and not too crumbly(God I hate that). The chocolate chip cookies are very rich and flavorful, I honestly could not think of a single thing bad about them.. Usually, I have to have chocolate chip cookies(usually dry crunchy ones) with milk, but with these cookies that was not necessary! The chocolate chip’s themselves were so soft and almost gooey, but just solid enough not to fall apart or melt. I loved the chocolate chip cookies! I would rate them 10 out of 10! It was now time to try out the ‘cookies and cream’ style cookies! For the record, I have never had anything like this before.. So this was a first time for me. I took the second cookie out of the box and took my first bite. It was very good! It was an interesting mix of flavor, and a-bit more harder, but not in a bad way! Not bad at all! That being said, me and someone else I had it with agreed it wasn’t quite as good as the chocolate chip cookie.. As the lack of any chocolate chips in the cookie, reduced the moist chewiness. While the flavor was definitely good, it didn’t have the strong rich flavor of the chocolate chip cookie. I would recommend having the ‘cookies and cream’ style cookies with milk to add in that moistness. Don’t get me wrong, its a very delicious cookie! But the original chocolate chip cookie is simply a notch better. I would rate these ‘cookies and cream’ style cookies a 7 out of 10. I think if Ruby ever mixed the chocolate chip cookies with the Oreo toppings… That would be a GODLY cookie, maximum flavorful moistness! Haha

There was one more test to be done, just as I had done in the last review.. The age test. Probably my most hated thing about other pastries, usually store bought.. Is they age terribly and become rock solid, stale, sand like, and becomes almost inedible. The previous cookie pie passed the test with flying colors, so I wondered how these much smaller cookies with fair? I gave it about a week, far longer then most pastries could last and still be as good as day one. Is this recommended? Probably not, but me personally I like to enjoy my sweets over days. So this was a me thing to do.. Anyways the result of the age test? They passed! Though they become slightly more older and drier, they pretty much retained 90% of their moistness and soft texture! I literally cant think of any other cookies I have ever had that pulled that off.. Incredible, judging from this review and the first one, Ruby’s dishes pastry dishes are built to last and can either be eaten immediately or eaten through out the week and still be enjoyable! I’m glad this all worked out!

In conclusion, Ruby and her business Ruby’s Plates has once again impressed me and left me satisfied. She has also despite all her obstacles, shown her drive and dedication to please her customers. Not to mention she is very humble, when we first started doing these reviews.. While we are close friends, I have a responsibility to ethically be 100% honest in these reviews, I told her I hope she can accept the positive and the negative criticism with maturity. She told me she will accept it all, and is happy to accept constructive criticism, as it helps her grow and be a better business owner.. That humbleness impressed me, if she keeps this up and holds on to her principles and professionalism.. She and her business, will be destined for great things!

Thank you Ruby for working and collaborating with me again! I cannot wait until the next review!

It is always a pleasure my friend.

Stay tuned people!
